"In the absence of regulation of the national carbon market, the demand for voluntary initiatives to reduce emissions is growing." The expansion of Carbonext is one of the proofs of this.
"The demand, especially in the wake of COP-26 in Glasgow, is on the rise, as evidenced by the thermometer represented by the daily activities of some companies, as is the case of Carbonext, founded in 2010. The group's main goal is to develop projects that contribute to curb and reverse deforestation in the Amazon region.
The three projects that the forest engineer Janaína Dallan and a team of three technicians took care of in the beginning of 2020 have today become 20, involving 60 professionals. "Our projects encompass 2 million hectares of forest, which generate about 5 million tons of carbon credits per year," she describes. If the pace of expansion continues, these numbers could double by the end of the year. It took resilience to get here, but when Janaína started working in the area, the value of a carbon credit was less than a dollar. Now, it reaches U$15.
Double benefit: One of Carbonext's principles is to return to the forest 70% of the income generated by the projects. These amounts are applied in initiatives to benefit and develop local populations, with a focus on preserving the biodiversity of the Amazon biome."
