Protecting a forest requires more than satellite images and data dashboards. In Carbonext's REDD+ projects, field monitoring teams travel by motorcycle, boat, and on foot through vast territories — observing, recording, and responding to threats in real time. This continuous presence on the ground is what transforms monitoring into action, and action into verified results.
Routes That Can Reach 400 km in a Day
In the Ybyrá REDD+ Project, field teams travel more than 4,000 kilometers per month across 74 rural properties and 76,000 hectares of Amazon forest — roughly the distance from Brazil's northern to southern tip. On some days, the routes reach 200, 300, or nearly 400 kilometers on unpaved roads, through dust, potholes, and hard terrain. Every meter covered is a meter where deforestation, fire, illegal access, or signs of wildlife can be identified — and responded to.
What Satellite Imagery Alone Cannot Capture
Field patrols don't just log checkpoints — they read the territory. Agents observe irregular access points, traces of movement, open clearings, smoke residue, and other signs of pressure on the forest. This ground-level perspective complements remote monitoring and provides the context needed to understand what is really happening in the landscape. In the AWA Project, community members trained as Forest Guardians play a central role in this work, bringing local knowledge and a continuous presence that technology alone cannot replicate.
Land, Water, and Network: Three Dimensions of Monitoring
Monitoring in Carbonext's projects happens on multiple fronts. On land, motorcycle teams patrol roads and forest edges. On water, agents navigate rivers and flooded areas to reach remote locations. And at the community level, local organizations — like the Forest Guardians in AWA — create a network of continuous vigilance rooted in the territory itself. Together, these three layers of presence cover what no single tool or system could cover alone: the full complexity of the Amazon landscape.
