The Fortaleza Ituxi REDD+ project protects forests located in one of the regions with the highest rate of deforestation in the Amazon Biome: the municipality of Labrea.

As the southernmost city in Amazonas, Lábrea is geographically located near the "Arc of Deforestation" and neighbors other highly deforested municipalities.

Our challenge

Before the project was implemented, the Fortaleza Ituxi area suffered a deforestation rate of 0.7% annually, which is equivalent to 326 soccer fields being cut down every year. The main factors that led the region to lead the deforestation statistics were land grabbing, farming, and logging.

Our project

In 2013, we began monitoring fauna and flora, carbon stock measurements, and developing income alternatives for extractivist communities.
