The Hiwi REDD+ project is a consortium of four rural properties that protects more than 20,000 hectares of tropical forest in the municipality of Bujari, in Acre.

The area was threatened by cattle ranching, and our preservation efforts are already paying off: the first round of Hiwi credits should be released in 2022.

Our challenge

Before the project was implemented, the Unitor area suffered a deforestation rate of 0.83% annually, which is equivalent to 170 soccer fields being cut down every year. The main factor that led the region to the deforestation statistics was the cattle-raising activity.

Our project

In 2019, we started monitoring fauna, flora, and forest integrity, carbon stock measurements, and developing environmental education and sustainable livestock activities in the project's communities, which have a total of more than 840 families.
